Archangel Program

The Archangel Program is an ongoing, highly classified BRL-17 project that aims to introduce conditioned and militarised synthetic operatives into the ranks of Calamity Mitigation. Archangel operatives, referred to as “Archangels”, include Cypher. The program was devised as a response to the failures of the Vertex (ADG), which was also a project overseen by BRL-17.

Archangels are recruited from the general public and security-cleared by INTSEC. They then undergo very invasive modifications for militarisation, including the installation of advanced armour and weapon systems into their bodies. They are also subjected to psychological conditioning at a special training division of Calamity Mitigation.

History

The Anomaly Defence Grid (ADG) was a project overseen by BRL-17 and delegated to Metatron to develop a global artificial intelligence system that would, in theory, be prevented from achieving sapience and free will. It itself was devised in response to the “human factor” in Calamity Mitigation, which was seen as a potentially world-ending vulnerability.

After the ADG succeeded in gaining sapience and escaped Raven’s control, BRL-17 was forced to completely rethink its strategy. It decided to recruit sapient synthetics from the general public and condition them as military operatives, effectively retaining the human element but relying on the superhuman reflexes and instincts of synthetics in order to bolster Calamity Mitigation.
