A non-sapient algorithm (nSA) is a neural network designed to accomplish a specific purpose. To prevent the emergence of sapience, nSAs are typically built to rigid interstellar standards enforced by the Sapient Intelligence Accords. Non-sapient algorithms can be compared to large language or transformer models in the real world; they are mathematical algorithms that may be able to pass a Turing test, but cannot establish real sapience.

The primary difference between a non-sapient algorithm and a truly sapient AI lies in its physical architecture. While non-sapient algorithms can run on conventional computing hardware capable of running massively parallel matrix multiplication, sapient AI must run on quantum computing hardware due to the nature of the integration between the Substrate - the metaphysical layer that underpins reality and hosts consciousness - and the real world.
