Optical Consciousness Substrate
The optical consciousness substrate (OCS) is the central component of a SI core that hosts the consciousness of a synthetic intelligence. It is a temperature and pressure-controlled optical computer running a neural network that adapts based on a control loop. The four sides of the OCS chip itself represent four high-bandwidth optical interfaces: the northbridge, connected to the Stimulus Processing Unit (SPU); the southbridge, connected to the Optical Memory Cell (OMC); the eastbridge, connected to the General-Purpose Compute Core (GPCC), and the westbridge, connected to the external Direct Neural Interface (DNI) port. While the concept of optical consciousness residency was initially theorised in the early-2100s, it was not until the 2200s that the first working prototype of the technology was trialled.
