Incremental Conscious Upload (ICU) is a system by which the underlying medium of a consciousness can be altered, for, to example, migrate from an organic to a synthetic body while preserving continuity of self and preventing metaphysical severance. ICU is the current "gold standard" in human society for consciousness transfers, and is used in all synthetic conversions. It was initially developed by Dr. Timothy Barretto at the robotics division of Küiser Laboratories for the Artificial Lifeform Experiment (ALEX) project.
In the case of a biological to synthetic migration, the system uses nanobots to progressively transform each biological neuron into a synthetic equivalent. Once all neurons are successfully replaced, the pattern is then transferred from the source matrix into the destination SI core using a direct transfer connection that progressively maps each source neuron into a location in the processor while maintaining its connections via a proxy.
