A quantum computer is a specialised type of computer that exploits quantum mechanics to perform calculations. In the Calamity Multiverse, quantum computers are used in a wide array of fields, from offloading accelerable workloads in general-purpose computers, to running quantum encryption algorithms, and performing targeting calculations for bridge generators.

Quantum computers can be networked together to exchange qubits over long distances, and those with access can even participate in a global scientific network known as the Quantum Internet. Most modern quantum computers make use of room-temperature superconductors (RTSCs) and the physics of diamond lattice nitrogen-vacancy centres to avoid the requirement of bulky cooling systems, but due to poor physical scaling, higher power quantum computers still require dedicated cryogenic refrigeration.

Regulation

Due to their potential as dual-use items, quantum computers require an export license to sell, and are restricted in the instructions that can be built into their processing cores to prevent them from being used to perform portal targeting calculations or illicit quantum encryption. Licensing is delegated to local governments, but overseen at a high level by Raven.
