The MoodMatic, officially known as the Mood Enhancement Device (MED), was a failed BioCorp medical device designed to chemically regulate a patient’s mood throughout the day. It was highly controversial for its usage by the United States government as an alternative to sectioning for mentally unstable individuals, as part of a commercial agreement with the company. Patients would not only be forced to continue using the device to avoid being institutionalised, but would also be required to pay massive subscription fees and eventually become dependent on the neuroregulatory drugs.

The device consisted of an enclosure with three large syringe pumps, each holding a vial of a different neuroregulatory agent. A fourth vial was considered, but not implemented in production. Over the course of the day, the machine would actuate the syringe pumps to regulate the patient’s mood via an IV line according to a pre-programmed profile. The agents were a subscription service and renewed on a monthly basis.

Fate

The MED was eventually withdrawn from use after a public outcry over the drug dependency problems generated by it. Initially, BioCorp remained defensive and claimed this was false, but eventually admitted it was true. A court case to convict BioCorp of intentionally creating the dependency failed on account of some jury members, which BioCorp secretly pressured into nullifying the verdict.
