An anticognition microwave beam (AMB) is a type of directed microwave weapon, which sole purpose is to induce disruption of neuronal action potentials in the human brain. Effects include headaches, worse memory recall, and a reduction in concentration; higher energy levels can cause seizures and brain damage. The first AMBs were developed by Nikolai Kaibyshev, a Russian neuroscientist working for the Federal Security Service (FSB), and used against diplomats in the early 21st Century as part of what became known as the "Havana syndrome".

In the late 21st and 22nd centuries, governments developed countermeasures against AMBs, including the addition of anti-microwave shielding beneath the walls of secure installations. This resulted in them being rendered ineffective for their original purpose of disrupting diplomatic operations, however they continued to be used to target individuals. Some governments even experimented utilising higher-energy AMB weapons for riot control; however, these efforts were quickly discontinued as the permanent side effects became known.
