Wormhole Relay

From Calamity Wiki

A wormhole relay is a communications device that uses wormholes to transmit information over long distances in the same dimension without the primary limitation of spacecom systems: latency. Their serious drawbacks, including a huge energy requirement that scales with distance and low data throughputs, make them an option only for parties willing to potentially shell out millions of units for every minute they stay open. Time-division multiplexing (TDM) can route several lower bandwidth connections over the same open relay, potentially reducing the cost for individual phone calls to the range of thousands of units. Consumer calls are also subject to preemption by higher-priority calls, including those by corporate and governmental personnel, as well as official Raven communications, which override all others.

Due to their sheer physical size, most wormhole relays are installed in large colonies or mounted on flagship stations and capital ships - however, almost all are remotely accessible from the standard communications network, making them usable from any nearby location. The largest manufacturer of relays is CORE Bridge Systems.
