Cluster Size Problem

From Calamity Wiki

The cluster size problem is a scaling problem with sapient artificial intelligences that limits their maximum achievable level of intelligence. It is the primary reason why superintelligent sapient AI (SSAI) is rare in the Calamity Multiverse. The problem occurs due to the intrinsic self-limiting property of substratic networks; increasing interconnectedness causes exponential slowdown of network development and eventual stability.

The most effective known way to mitigate the cluster size problem is to split a sapient AI up into multiple compute subunits that are connected together to form a system; effectively large numbers of effective individuals operating in perfect synchronicity. This, however, results in the decoherence of consciousness and as such “superintelligent” sapient AI thinks and acts fundamentally distinct from discrete sapient AI. Additionally, such systems are vulnerable to Erosion.
