Bureau of Facilities Management
The Bureau of Facilities Management Building is the headquarters of the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Facilities Management department, located on 20 M St SE in Washington DC.
Basement
The Bureau of Facilities Management building had a strange number of sub-basements, apparently originally intended for archival storage of paperwork, known as the Building Management Archives. These contained several large freezers, designed to keep paperwork from decaying. Lesser known was an even deeper sub-basement level, which was sealed in 2014 due to asbestos contamination and lack of funding for cleanup.
This sealed sub-basement had a number of very strange properties, including passageways bricked up and filled in with concrete, as well as an abandoned 600A electrical relay that seemingly supplied power through the wall into the filled in areas. Odd posters were reportedly seen in the area, including one that said "Be a good employee and keep lights to a minimum in this area! Remember - The Power Company appreciates cost savings! - Copyright 1967, Department of Energy".
