The Personnel Evacuation System (PES) is a small train system below the University of Cambridge complex that was originally intended to evacuate the main chemistry building in case of a fire or experiment hazard requiring immediate vacation of the premises. The system is designed to send trains off as fast as possible, with a curtain of air to keep back any flames. Due to the system’s age and fragility, its hazardous nature, and the extreme noise generated by the blower fans, it is only permitted to be used as a last resort in genuine emergencies.
