Energy infrastructure is significantly diversified in the present human civilisation. Nuclear power remains the most widespread source of energy, while renewables now supply nearly half of planetary power, and exotic power sources feed humanity’s most ambitious scientific endeavours. Due to the impact of the Climate Crisis, fossil fuels have long since been banned by international treaties, excluding a select few exceptions.

Nuclear

The most prevalent and reliable type of nuclear power plant is fusion, with the most popular design being the tokamak reactor. Inertial confinement is also common. Fission power plants are still in widespread use, especially across Earth and on Mars, but future construction has been discontinued as fusion is both a cheaper and safer alternative.

Exotic

Another type is the singularity reactor, which extracts energy from a contained black hole. While they produce immense amounts of power, their design, construction, and staffing requirements are extremely demanding, so even planets with a significant economy such as Earth feature less than a hundred.
