A singularity reactor is a reactor that extracts energy from the Hawking radiation of a contained artificial singularity. The first experimental singularity reactor was developed by the Interdimensional Research Treaty Organisation (IRTO) in the early 2200s after humanity created their first singularity; CORE Energy later developed the first commercial singularity power plants, which were aimed at replacing the capacity of several nuclear fission or fusion power plants; the company also released the Qube reactor, a tiny, portable singularity reactor. In the modern era, singularity reactors are also used for powering very large spacecraft and wormhole relays.

The “failure mode” of a singularity reactor occurs if the containment field is ever allowed to fail. Usually, there are multiple levels of redundancy, but if the field fails even for a fraction of a second the singularity will immediately exert its gravitational field on its surroundings and destroy the containment generators, making it nearly impossible to control.
