Gridforms are biological organisms that evolved around a Controlled Substratic Grid (CSG). The forms are physically large, homogenous, mobile black blobs with multiple tentacles; they can spawn in Grid-supported areas during breach events. Uncontrolled gridforms seek out biomass to grow themselves and are extremely dangerous. Engineered gridforms can be created to be used as weapons or utilities and are engineered to be controlled.

Gridform Mitigation Units (GFMUs), hybrid biological-technological mitigation packages developed by BioCorp that include a bioengineered antagonistic gridform usually mounted on a semi-trailer, have been created as a countermeasure against gridforms and can be deployed rapidly in breach scenarios. Gridforms also require the existence of the artificial grid to sustain themselves; isolating the grid in an area will also cause them to collapse.

Background

A feature of controlled substratic grids (CSGs) is their increased interconnectedness within their own networks. This results in rapid evolution of composite multicellular organisms where every cell operates as a brain, an eye, and a muscle; this would normally be impossible due to the Cluster Size Problem.
