Arctarus was a sector in the Girvan Offshore Science Facility (GOSF) designed for containing anomalous objects and entities created by radiation from the Avernus Cavity Reactor (ACR) below. Because of containment security protocols, fixed lighting was strictly prohibited in the sector. Personnel either used flashlights or headlamps.

For efficiency of construction, the sector was built from a series of prefabricated, asbestos-insulated modules suspended against the roof of the large cavern which it inhabited. The cave floor below had a tendency to accumulate liquid runoff from reactor cooling systems and eventually ended up turning into a caustic artificial lake.

Control wing

This area was a series of control rooms where sector security staff remotely monitored each of the containment halls, and could initiate lockdowns when necessary. Staff also had a direct communications link to the reactor control room, and were able to request adjustment of radiation levels and the actuation of the bombardment chamber shutters.

Maintenance wing

The area contained communications, power supply, and life support systems for both the control area and containment wings. Leading up to the evacuation of the facility, the area became contaminated from a Nevrin-54 neurotoxin leak in the containment area's emergency kill system, which resulted in the deaths of all Maintenance and Containment personnel.

Containment wing

This area was where entities and objects were contained under constant supervision. Four blocks were constructed, each containing a containment hall. Each block contained eight laboratories for experimentation, with the exception of Block C, which only had two.

Containment blocks:

  • Block A (Athanatos), used primarily for objects with anomalous traits
  • Block B (Below), used primarily for humanoid entities
  • Block C (Core), a special, central area, which was exposed directly to the reactor below* This wing was used for long-term bombardment experiments
  • Block D (Descent), a spare area which was never used before the facility was abandoned

Reactor wing

The highest security location in Arctarus, this area contained the bombardment chamber, was used to perform the most intensive irradiation experiments with the full force of the Avernus reactor below. It was also one of only two ways to access the Reactus sector, which housed the reactor and its subsystems.

This wing additionally housed some components of the reactor cooling system, that were too big to fit below in the Reactus cavern. These moved the coolant through pipes in a nearby cave down through an opening into the reactor facility.
