A superconducting linear motor (SLM) or superconducting linear actuator (SLA) is a type of linear motor that uses superconductors to conduct electricity without resistive losses, allowing for extremely high magnetic fields and extreme, sometimes even relativistic rates of acceleration. SLMs form part of modern railgun platforms, including nuclear railguns, and are used extensively in space launch systems and military robotics.
