Avernus Project

The Avernus Project was a project conducted in secret by Nevrin in the 1940s, with the goal of opening a bridge to another dimension. The company constructed a deep-earth facility known as the Girvan Offshore Science Facility (GOSF) beneath Ailsa Craig in order to carry out the project without interruption. Critical was the galraite previously mined at the Venetian City and the completed Cavity Reactor design, which was an early singularity-based bridge generator.

While the initial goal of the project was to open a bridge, the crude technology used by Nevrin at the time resulted in a bridge being torn open to the Entropic Plane. This intense entropic radiation, initially uncontrolled, was eventually harnessed by Nevrin and used to perform exposure experiments on objects and living creatures in the facility's Arctarus Sector. This in part led to the company's downfall in 1995, as sabotage of the containment systems by an agent of Dr. Evan Grey resulted in the catastrophic Island Containment Breach.
