A portal is an artificial three-dimensional form of a wormhole manifold that is optimised for personnel traversal. The point where it cuts over to the other side is known as its threshold. Portals enable travel within the same dimension, as opposed to bridges, which cross different dimensions. They also require a conscious effort to establish both sides, which makes unsolicited creation of portals to unauthorised areas effectively impossible.

Most portals are created by first using a wormhole generator to open a wormhole, then via the flattening of that wormhole's manifold using an isosurface manipulator. As is true with all wormholes, they require constant power injection to remain open, which can be accomplished commercially with a device such as an ion unit. The amount of power required to sustain a portal is directly proportional to the distance it crosses, equivalent to the minimum energy required to travel the same distance using normal transportation methods.

Society

Portals are used for intra-planetary travel within humanity, but due to their massive cost and energy overhead, they are not only no cheaper than existing methods of long-distance travel, and they are limited to corporate and/or government users.
