Nevrin-54 was an industrial pesticide originally developed by Nevrin in the 1950s. The compound was unlike any other agent developed at the time, as it used properties of a prion to induce protein misfolding in plants. It also had the unique ability to spread between plants, easing the workload on farmers, and manifested as a dense red gas. It was, however, toxic not only to all plants but most forms of biological life, making it extremely lethal to humans, where it would act as a neurotoxin and gradually cause delirium and brain death over several weeks' time. This led to its use being banned internationally in the late 1990s.

The compound was later used by the World Küiser Corporation (WKC) as part of the WKCNE biological weapons project. The WKC used its pathogenic properties to develop a variant that would spread between individuals, lying dormant in their nervous systems until intentionally "triggered". Due to the agent's exceptionally small particulate size, normal respirators did not suffice to protect against it, and cleanup crews in conflict zones were required to wear SCBAs.
