Car
Cars in the Calamity Multiverse, primarily on Earth, have many differences from their real-world equivalents. Although in the present day public transport has replaced private in many countries, many types of cars still exist, split between fully-electric and turbine-based combustion technology that can run on any burnable fuel; they are required for the longer distances between country areas that are not served by robust train services. Airborne Vehicles (AVs) also exist alongside conventional cars, which are more expensive but still in the range of affordability, and are often used to bypass local ground traffic.
History
Combustion
The history of combustion-based cars operating on fossil fuel engines diverges as far back as 1963, starting with the Chrysler Turbine Car. Instead of failing as a product, the vehicle became a hit success, and gas turbine based cars rapidly achieved a large market share. They were praised for their robust and long-lasting nature, and several of the issues with the technology, including noise, fuel economy, and acceleration were solved by innovations at Chrysler over the next few years. By the late 20th Century, turbine cars represented the majority, and internal combustion engines had all but fallen out of favour. In the early 21st Century, another type of turbine-powered vehicle hit the market; which featured a high-bypass turbofan instead of the existing low-bypass internal gas turbines. These were popular in performance racecars but were extremely noisy, resulting in governments establishing restrictions against them in cities.
