A biopunk is a transhumanist who is largely focused on biological modification (biomodding) over cybernetic implants. They commonly perform biomodding to enhance their own bodies and bolster their abilities, and in some cases even completely transform themselves by adding additional organs or limbs, or adopting alien or monstrous forms, in ways deemed negative, repulsive, or taboo by the mainstream.

The biopunk community is considered by many to be the darker side of transhumanism due to the visceral appearance of many biopunks and their history in collaborating with highly controversial corporations such as BioCorp to achieve their modding goals. Despite this, the majority of biopunks are largely known to be both welcoming and kind to outsiders.

Overlap

There is often overlap in biopunk culture with synthetics who also choose to adopt unconventional forms, such as quadrupedal machines and machines without a standard anthropomorphic form. They share the same struggles of alienation from society and the inability to interact with systems designed for anthros of a certain size range. This has often resulted in the two living among each other in their own societal enclaves.

Conflicts

Biopunks are often viewed as dangerous by outsiders due to their appearances, especially in more conservative regions, which has led to several conflicts in the past. These conflicts have been driven by the fact that unsafe biomodding occasionally leads to the adoption of more "animalistic" traits and the loss of an individual's higher brain functions. Originally, this was met with extreme violence using the military, but as society developed and adapted to biopunks living among them containment protocols were developed, often using heavy tranquillisers to stun them before bringing them to a safe location for rehabilitation.
