Liverpool Cathedral

The Liverpool Cathedral is a large cathedral that is located in Liverpool inside the British Capital Territory, built between 1904 and 1978. It is notable for the secret incorporation of an experimental nuclear reactor system developed by Nevrin underneath its foundations, a columnar traveling wave reactor reactor intended to effectively provide power to the building's heating systems indefinitely. The installation of the system was part of a secret agreement between the Church of England and Nevrin leadership, permitting Nevrin to test the system at their site in exchange for a significant donation to the Church.

The reactor remains partially active to the current day, but is buried under concrete, preventing detection, access, or inspection. Since the building heating system's modernisation several times in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it is no longer doing much except heating the coils of a forgotten ice-melting system on the exterior pavement and a heated interior stone floor, as well as radiators inside several forgotten or sealed rooms of the Cathedral. The original control systems were located in an adjacent building, but that building was since demolished with the wiring harnesses cut off and buried. A rudimentary backup safety system based on electromechanical devices was actually integrated into the reactor enclosure, but due to water ingress, the entire system has since rusted away.

The fuel assemblies, which were encased in iron and again in concrete, have in the meantime slowly been leaching their contents into the groundwater as the foundations have eroded. Worse still, it is only a matter of time before the foundations fail, collapsing the entire cathedral above.
