Fractal Armour

Fractal armour is a material originally invented and currently manufactured by Voima Tech Industries that can absorb entropic radiation, slowly wearing down over time. The armour is made of a nanolathe-printed crystalline structure that carries an entropic charge. Reflecting the difficulty of its production, the material costs approximately U€8,000,000 per single kilogram, and can only be sold to organisations such as Raven.

Fractal armour is extremely valuable for countering anomalous threats and is used by Raven to protect critical facilities, as well as for outfitting Exosuits for the protection of military personnel that combat anomalous threats. It is usually used as a second line of defence for attacks that bypass forcefield shielding and pulsed phase arrays via cross-dimensional penetration. It is useless for defending against conventional attacks, and for this reason must be placed behind existing conventional armour systems. Failure to do so exposes the armour to trivial destruction and completely defeats its integrity guarantees.

Mechanism

Fractal armour in both its raw and cut plate forms is an almost obsidian-like black crystalline, possessing an adamantine lustre. As the armour plate absorbs energy and begins to be worn away, the crystalline matrix develops cracks. The more damage the plate sustains, the more likely spalling is to occur, which is extremely dangerous - since plates are normally located behind any forcefields for their own protection, this can easily result in the death of the operator.

Some advanced exosuits mitigate this hazard by sandwiching fractal armour between two forcefields, but this doubles usual power consumption and so the second field is usually only switched after the system detects extensive fracturing of the cells.
