Ion Unit

From Calamity Wiki

Ion units, developed by Metatron Exophysics, are devices used to create and link portals, and supply them with the necessary power to maintain their connections. This is useful, as rather bulky power supply equipment does not need to remain at the points of entry and exit. First tested for linking rooms at the Northbrook Polytechnic, these devices are essentially two portals stacked back-to-back in such a way that the gap between them (known as the Threshold) is as small as possible. Power is injected into the portals via the unit’s frame, which sustains the wormhole connection. An unfortunate failure mode of these devices is when they either lose power or one of the portals is unexpectedly disconnected - the occupier of the intermediate manifold will be frozen in stasis between the portals until the connection is restored.

Ion units are constructed from two flat, black rectangular panels made of steel. Each is a power injection matrix for each respective side of the portal. The front matrix includes a red light, which indicates the device is powered on, as well as a small vent to cool internal circuitry. Cables lead off from the bottom right corner of the front matrix, which are connected to power supply and control equipment, including the central Portal Management System (PMS).
